Lifestyle protection

I spend a lot of time thinking about how to protect peoples health, as I work in vaccines, but recently I have been spending a lot of time in this uncomfortable economic climate thinking about how to protect my lifestyle.

I have read a lot on how to do it as an entrepreneur, and understand the tools that can be used there, but because I really love my job and the people I work with, am trying to find the tools I can use to try and protect my lifestyle without radical actions (like hiring a personal assistant).

The best thought I have come up with is has been to see what I can do to empower both the people in my group and the entire research team. This has become more important as there were a couple of key failures that occurred when I was on vacation, and I want to make sure I can continue to take vacations without having heartburn.

Right now I am focusing on training the people in my group on how to do what I do, and I am thinking about what can be done to push this through the entire research team.

I will let you know how this works.

Sinoenergy Corporation - SNEN productive prevention pick

Sinoenergy Corporation is a productive prevention pick:
  • Baseline - On a macrolevel the continuing burgeoning Chinese economy and demand for cars brings a concomitant demand for fuel
Factors
  1. The Chinese Government has decided to lower its subsidies of fuel making gasoline more expensive and other fuels therefore more attractive
  2. As Chinese development continues, there is a greater awareness of air pollution and natural gas provides lower particulate and greenhouse gas emissions
  3. There are relatively few natural gas filling stations available, allowing expansion into a relative vacuum which is easier than trying to oust an established ecosystem
Looking at these factors I think Sinoenergy is a long term productive prevention pick, which I am interested in picking up at about $6 a share.

Preventative Investing

Applying productive prevention to investing has two parts:

1. Looking at macroeconomic factors, determining important problem trends and then investing in industries that would address these problems. Examples of this are investing in healthcare for the global aging population, or alternative energy sources for current energy issues

2. Looking at individual companies and see who is preparing themselves best to survive tough conditions, vaccinating themselves against difficulty.

Number 1 can be used for short and long term investing, while number 2 is really only useful in the long term, as time goes on I will explore specific examples of each of these ideas in more detail.

What is productive prevention

The concept of productive prevention first occured to me walking in the hills of Elba listening to Stephen Covey. I realized I wanted to make a difference, wanted it to have personal and macro reach, and wanted to make the world a better place by preventing bad things from happening before they start.

This has led me to pursue a career in Vaccines, try to exercise and eat better, and prepare for financial rainy days.

In a nutshell - Productive Prevention is about:

1. Identifying the biggest risks

2. Determining ways to proactively address the risks

3. Selecting the most efficient way to deal with the problem.

This blog will talk about my efforts to apply this philosophy to vaccines, health, investing and life in general.
